No, But Really, What Do You Do?

Betsy Kagen: Editor, Film & Television

Betsy Kagen Season 2 Episode 11

No, but really, what do you do as an editor for movies, tv shows and documentaries? Well, as it turns out, it depends… Betsy shares her experiences on a range of projects and how each one is a little bit different. She walks us through her day depending on what type of project she’s on, what stage of filming they’re in, or when she was brought in to work on the project. As an editor, she plays a role in creative decision-making that can be a huge asset throughout the filming process to ensure all the necessary scenes and visuals are captured. But her most crucial role is helping a director bring their vision to life, and that relationship and trust-building between editor and director is a driving force in the success of her work. She also talks about the balance between individual work involved in her job and the collaboration with others on set or after filming – from the director to producers to writers to actors to documentary subjects - to bring out the best story possible.
